Celebrate Girl Scouts leaders and volunteers

Written by Marcella Germanotta

Yes, there is a special day to say thanks to Girl Scout volunteers - those neighbors and friends who give their time, resources and financial gifts to make sure girls are given the opportunity of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

April 22, is Girl Scout Leader Day - a national observance. It’s a day we can salute Girl Scout leaders for their generous gifts of time and talents to girls in kindergarten to seniors in high school. These women and men see firsthand the impact Girl Scouting has on girls. They are witness to the success and development of girls and young women in Girl Scouting. They are part of the fun, friendship, learning and adventure that makes up Girl Scouting. For many, it’s this interaction that keeps them volunteering and giving back to an organization that is having an impact on their lives as well.

They realize that the time they volunteer to shape girls’ lives in Girl Scouts is a reinforcement of their commitment to girls everywhere. As one local leader said, “I like having the opportunity to support Girl Scouting because I feel I am making a difference in the world. There’s so much we can do to improve the lives of girls, and this will,  in return, improve the lives of women in the
future. ”

The benefits of volunteering are many. Perhaps it’s an opportunity to spend more time with your daughter or girl in your life. It’s been said that all children need is a little help, a little hope, and someone who believes in them. A Girl Scout volunteer may be that someone.

In this age of ever-advancing technology, it’s important to help girls make real connections. To encourage them to discover how much the quality of life is enhanced by a sense of purpose and a value system to believe in. New technology can seem awesome, the future uncertain with change. But the Girl Scout Promise and Law continues to guide girls through the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Adults and girls, in partnership, find ways to take action together to make the world a better place.

So, on April 22, make sure you say thank you to that Girl Scout volunteer who has helped a Brownie troop lead a flag ceremony for the first time, to the Junior Girl Scout leader who took the time to take a troop camping or the volunteer who organized a field trip to the Air & Space Center for a special event that included meeting a female astronaut. They are helping build tomorrows leaders – one girl at a time. Are you? Consider sharing your time and talents – whatever they may be, and whatever length of time you want to give. Maybe next year, you’ll be among those we are celebrating on April 22!
