Meet Mary H. Beamer -

She Loves Helping People

Mary has been involved in DAV Chapter 2, located at 15460 Warwick Blvd., Newport News since 1992. She retired from the military nearly 30 years ago, but her service to veterans has not stopped.

Mary joined the Army in 1954 at the age of 17. She went through basic training at Fort Lee. She completed two tours in Germany and one in Japan. In 2010, she received the Outstanding Veteran of the Year Award.

Mary was trained as a medic during her military service. During her career, she worked in a burn unit in Houston Texas. Many Vietnam vets passed through and she tended to their needs and lifted their sprits.

Today, Mary is a state representative for the Disabled American Veterans, the first black woman to hold that position. She volunteers at the VA Medical Center in Hampton Virginia. Her passion is helping female veterans who often do not seek assistance. She can be reached at the DAV Chapter 2 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at
875-0721.

Mary’s advice for young military women is to seek assistance from a DAV chapter representative. She will help you file a claim or lend a helping hand.

Mary loves helping people. It is her life’s passion.
