Friendship Should Be Valued
Written by Marcella Germanotta

You don’t have to be wealthy, famous or beautiful to do it successfully. It won’t cost you anything. It’s one of life’s great gifts and is as essential as food and shelter.

We begin to socialize early in childhood. Even young children will gravitate toward others who mirror their personality or compliment their likes and attitudes. But unlike adults, children tend to make friends quickly and with ease. Adults become more discerning and demanding with age, and sometimes don’t feel they have time for friends.

Boys and girls exhibit different patterns and attitudes toward friendship. Boys talk less and prefer group settings and are activity oriented. Girls, on the other hand, prefer to relate to people one-on-one. They like conversations, mutual self-disclosure, more exclusive relationships.

Although social media makes it much easier to stay in touch with friends and family, the female gender still tend to have a select few who they consider “close buds” that they can depend on without hesitation.

Women seek out friendships as a supportive network. These networks make life easier when you need help, from a small favor to a life-changing matter. They are a source to draw strength and courage in times of trouble. And, let’s face it friends put smiles on our face. There’s nothing better than a girls’ night out.

Girl Scouting is a prime example of such an outlet or network. Girls have a chance to build and develop social skills – something desperately needed in our tech driven world, while adults discover they have a “built-in” family of sisters in Girl Scouting.

Girls and adults repeatedly emphasize the importance of the all-girl setting: an environment that offers strong female role models, mentors and concerned peers. As Girl Scouts approach their 100th birthday, reach out to make new friends and connect with old through Girl Scouting. Visit the Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast Facebook or website to add some smiles into your life. You’ll find that friendship and Girl Scouting are synonymous! I know I have.

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. Camp Like a Girl Scout this summer! Day and resident sessions available at rates you can afford.
