Zumba is here to stay.
Have Fun While Getting Fit.

 Written by Liz Vazquez

It’s December already?

Looking back at 2009 it was a challenging year for me and full of surprises.

One of the boldest moves I made was to go out on my own teaching Zumba. At first I was nervous but my passion kept me going.
As I was about to start a Zunba class, I remember inviting a gym member to join the class. Her answer left me speechless. In the most annoying way she replied “no I am going to work out.” So needless to say I never invited her again!

Should we dismiss Zumba as an effective way to burn calories? Absolutely not!

I have seen so many people walking at a very slow speed on a treadmill and talking on the phone while barely breaking a sweat.  People are drenched in sweat after one of my Zumba classes!
A young man at the YMCA where I teach asked me the other day what is Zumba?

Zumba is a FITNESS CLASS that incorporates dance moves with fitness moves to help you burn those calories. Is it a dancey complicated class?  I have heard that term before. No! Zumba is all about the student and making the experience the best that it can be.

Zumba combines Latin music such as Merengue, Salsa, Cumbia, Reggaeton and more.  We also use international music such as Bhangra and as your instructor I try my best to always break down the moves for you to make it easier to accomplish your goals.

When Alberto Perez created Zumba 5 years ago, even he did not foresee how popular it would become.  Zumba has sold over 3.5 million DVD’S through infomercials and has over 20,000 instructors in 40 countries. I am one of 15,000 are here in the U.S.

Furthermore Zumba has branched out to other programs. Zumba Toning is designed to tone and sculpt your body with light weights, Zumbatomic is for kids and Zumba Gold is for people 60 and older. Zumba also incorporated water exercise classes called Aqua Zumba.

Zumba has been featured in thousands of magazines and recently Alberto Perez or Beto as we call him, was featured on the Today show and Dr. Oz just to name a few.

So no I don’t think it’s a fad that will soon die out.Is one of your New Year’s resolutions to lose weight? Are you ready to reach your fitness goals? Let’s have fun doing it! Let’s Zumba!

Zoombaween Update
I am happy to say my Zumba event on October 30th, went really well. I had Sarina Jain creator of Masala Bhangra as an invited guest. Sarina is a very successful young woman who started Masala Bhangra 10 years ago after her father had passed away. She combined her traditional Indian dance with her 18 years as a fitness instructor and Masala Bhangra was born. Many instructors flew into Virginia Beach for the event and I was able to raise money for the American Red Cross.
