Conduct an Extreme Bed Makeover in 7 Blissful Layers!
Written by Nannette Bongiovi

At the end of a long day, is there anything better than slipping into a comfortable bed and drifting off to a blissful night’s sleep? Think about the importance of a good night’s sleep. Have you ever been in a bad mood or just not felt good because you did not sleep well the night before? A good night’s sleep affects your attitude, your productivity and your health.
Improving the comfort of your bed can improve the quality of your sleep. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could make your bed so comfortable, you’ll wake up ready to face anything the day brings you?  Well, you can with an extreme bed makeover!
An extreme bed makeover involves creating a “blissful bed” by layering the essential elements needed for a great night’s sleep, no matter what type of bed you own.
Obviously, the basic foundation of a good night’s sleep is a decent mattress. A mattress need not be expensive to be good. What affects your sleep the most is not the mattress itself, but what you layer on top of it.

 Layer 1: The Mattress Cover
Your mattress is an investment and you want it to last. A mattress cover does two things: it protects your mattress and if offers the first layer of comfort.

Layer 2: The Featherbed
You honestly do not know what you’ve been missing until you’ve slept on a featherbed. The featherbed is a plush layer of feathers that your body sinks into. If you lie on a hard surface, only a few parts of your body come in contact with that surface, and those parts must support all your weight. This creates uncomfortable pressure points, which cause you to toss and turn. A featherbed distributes that pressure to the entire surface of your body, thereby relieving pressure points and creating comfort. You’ll feel better and you’ll sleep better.

Layer 3: The Pillow
The pillow may be the most important element to a good night’s sleep. A pillow must support your head, so your neck and spine are properly aligned. A worn out pillow cannot do that. Think about the pillows on your bed. If they are soiled, limp, or older than you, it is time to replace them!
Your sleeping style will determine the most suitable pillow type. If you are a side sleeper, you will want a firm pillow. If you sleep on your back, or toss and turn throughout the night, a medium support pillow will work best. A soft support pillow provides the most comfort to stomach sleepers.

 Layer 4: The Sheets
Sheets are an important element, because they touch your skin all night long. Sheets made of high quality cotton are key. Those with a high thread count, ranging from 300 to 600, provide the most comfort. Thread count is the number of threads per square inch. A 300 thread count piece of fabric is made from weaving 150 horizontal threads with 150 vertical threads.
Take caution when shopping for sheets. If you find a set of high thread count sheets being sold for an unbelievably low price, chances are you will get what you pay for. Some manufacturers will fold a strand of thread in half and twist it. They will then weave their fabric from this double-ply thread. What they are selling might be labeled 600 thread count, but what you are actually buying is a 300 thread count set of sheets. They may feel soft and luxurious at first; but once you start using and laundering these sheets, they will eventually start to “pill” and feel like sandpaper. Be sure to look for product packaging that clearly states single ply threads.

Layer 5: The Blanket
Blankets add an additional layer of warmth. There are two types of blankets: woven and filled. Woven blankets add warmth. Their color and texture provide an elegant addition to your bed. Filled blankets are filled with down or a down alternative. They make perfect layering pieces and are wonderful on their own during the warmer months.

Layer 6: The Down Comforter
Being comfortable also means being comfortably warm. A down comforter can provide that comfort. Down is nature’s best insulator. A well made comforter traps air like a thermos. This thermal quality combined with the breath ability of down and an all-cotton cover provides temperature control rather than excessive heat; allowing the comforter to breathe, which keeps you warm but not sweaty.
The right comforter for you depends on how warm you feel at a room temperature of 70 degrees. If you feel warm, then you will want a light warmth comforter. If you feel cool at that temperature, then an extra warmth comforter is probably best. If 70 degrees feels just right, then choose a medium warmth comforter.

Layer 7: The Duvet Cover
If you have a comforter, then you need a comforter cover or “duvet cover.” The duvet cover protects the comforter and creates a visually appealing fashion statement for your bedroom.
Conduct your own Extreme Bed Makeover and look forward to a great night’s sleep!
