Walking in an Event Committee's Shoes

When I attended my first committee meeting in June, I wanted to learn about the Virginia Beach SPCA's Walk for the Animals. Having participated in charity walks before, I was curious about what happens "behind the scenes." I found my niche in the area of Social Media and Media and became a member of the Walk Committee.

The "To-Do List" was a lot to take in that first night. Event goals, the registration process, fundraising tips, prizes, games, and sponsorships are just a few items from the committee's agenda. I was raring to go, ready to jump in! The best part was that I was not the only one. In the two months since our first meeting, there is progress in all areas.

One asset of the Walk Committee is its diverse members, both newcomers and veterans, who come from different backgrounds and offer a variety of ideas, opinions, and valuable contacts. A combination of meetings, conference calls, and e-mail allows us to work with multiple schedules, making communication possible and painless.

Along the way, I am learning about the elements that go into planning this event. Looking across the room at our last committee meeting, it was great to see people smiling, eager to share ideas and offer help. My current commitment to this committee has been a true pleasure - where my questions are answered, my ideas heard and tons of Thank You's!
