On the Go with Women in Construction
Written by Wanda L. Piland

Women in Construction recently ventured to Charleston, South Carolina for a time of networking, education and planning. The occasion for the event was the NAWIC Spring Forum for the East Coast Region 11.  Those attending on behalf of our local chapter 137 were Arlene Klinedinst, Debbie Knight, Donna Shephard, Deana Zediker, Kim Myers, and Cindy Jones.
Our group spent Friday connecting with the ladies from our Teammate Chapter, which is Richmond. Teammates is a sister chapter which is designated each year. With a large National membership, the teammate chapter allows each group to benefit from the networking, friendship and knowledge of the other chapter’s members. Joint activities are planned during the year, and members are encouraged to visit the other chapter for monthly meetings.

This year the Greater Tidewater chapter hosted a lunch, tour, and wine tasting at Williamsburg Winery on Saturday, May 30.

“Turn Back the Hands of Time,” was the theme for this year’s forum.  A Hospitality Social was held poolside on Friday evening.  Saturday was a full day of meeting and workshops.  Vice President of our chapter, Debbie Knight, presented a workshop on the “Psychology of Safety.”

The grand event of Spring Forum was the formal banquet on Saturday night.  At the banquet, all Chapter Presidents entered the ballroom escorted by a few of the Charleston Firefighters, who had just returned from assisting with the Myrtle Beach fires. Regional awards were presented and The Greater Tidewater NAWIC Chapter was awarded first place for our WIC Week, which was chaired by Wanda Piland and Gloria Harris.

Summer is fast approaching, which means the NAWIC Greater Tidewater Chapter’s “Nineteenth Annual Golf Outing” is almost here!  This years’ tournament will be held on Monday, June 22 at the Riverfront Golf Course in Suffolk.  The golf tournament is the primary source of fundraising for our chapter.  The money raised from this event will enable us to promote the education of women in the construction industry, award scholarships and tradeswomen grants, and provide construction education programs.  It also allows us to make donations on behalf of the chapter to local community groups that help families in need, such as The Salvation Army, Samaritan House, ForKids, and Habitat for Humanity.  We need your help to make this a success.  If you have any questions regarding registration, sponsorships, or donations, please contact Jenny Davis at 757-499-3434, extension 2284 or Emily Ansell at 757-435-2044. Either of these ladies would be happy to talk with you.

NAWIC’s next monthly meeting will be held on

Wednesday, June 17, at the Springhill Suites by

Marriott, 6350 Newtown Road, Norfolk. The program for this evening will be “Construction Practical Advice and Do’s and Don’ts,” presented by attorney Stephen “Hobie” Andrews of Vandeventer Black LLP.
Please contact Julie McClung at jmcclung@goodmanco.com before June 12, for registration. The cost for this event is $23, and begins at 5:30 p.m.
