We all know the benefits of excising. Our bodies were meant to move. With any exercise, be it running, yoga, walking or bicycling, there are numerous good things that can occur to your body’s general well- being.

Some of the benefits of a regular exercise regimen include decreased stress, better weight control, and good cardiovascular health so that the incidence of stroke and heath attack is lessened. Regular exercise as simple as walking can help diabetic patients maintain better glucose (sugar) control and also help manage their weight. Studies have shown that exercise can contribute to a better quality of life as we age. It has been associated with a preventable factor in obtaining certain diseases.

Let’s talk briefly about the anatomy of the foot. Did you know that there are 26 bones, 33 joints, 18 muscles and numerous ligaments in each foot?

For such a condensed body part, think about all of the stress, strain and sometimes abuse that we expose our feet to everyday. This is why it is important to have the properly sized and selected shoe for the type or exercise you participate.

But before you start an exercise program, there are a couple of things that need to be addressed. Just what type of shoes and socks should I be wearing? For walking, it is best to select a good walking shoe with cushion for the heel and arch support. Make sure that the shoe is sized correctly.
Have your feet measured. Special tips to consider: purchase shoes t o fit the longest toe and make sure there is some space available at the tip of the shoe. If your feet are uneven in size, it may be better to fit the shoe to the larger foot.

For runners, there are numerous running shoe types based on the foot type. Try to get a running shoe that patterns your foot style. Running shoes typically have extra cushioning at the balls of the toes and heel. Remember, when you run, forces at the heel can be up to 3 to 4 times your body weight. With walking, the impact is lessened to about one and one half your body weight. Visit an athletic type shoe store. Usually the employees are more educated on how to fit you with the proper type and size of shoes. And you can benefit by having someone assist you that may be an avid runner or walker themselves.

Socks are just as important. If you tend to experience heavy perspiration, consider socks made out of materials for sweat absorption such as CoolMax. Excess perspiration can lead to fungal infection on the skin and nails. Feel like you need extra cushion? Try socks that have extra padding and cushion at the toes and heels. Too much friction can lead to blister formation. There are products on the market that can be used on the feet to help prevent blister. Two suggestions are NuSkin and moleskin.

If you have a health challenge, please visit your physician to see if you can start a regular exercise program. Try to remember to stretch and warm up slowly so your body can adapt to extra demands.
